What a content marketing agency does

Content marketing is the practice of publishing material an audience genuinely wants, so a brand earns attention before it asks for a sale. Firewater is a content marketing agency in Johannesburg, and we have produced this work for South African brands for 26 years.

The discipline covers research, planning, writing, design, video production and the distribution that follows. It works more slowly than advertising, and the accumulated value compounds. An article that answers a real buying question keeps earning search traffic long after a campaign flight has ended.

Most briefs reach us in the same condition: a website, a social account or two, and no agreed editorial view of what to publish or why. Our first job is to settle that question, then build a production rhythm your team can sustain. Where content sits inside a wider plan, it runs alongside the rest of our digital marketing services.

Strategy and planning come first

We start with the questions a buyer asks before they spend money. Those come from sales calls, support queries, search data and your own team. The list becomes a content plan, ordered by commercial value rather than by what is quickest to write.

Keyword research runs with our SEO team, because search demand shows which questions carry real volume behind them. We also check what already ranks for each one, and whether a new page can beat it. Publishing into a topic you cannot win is the most common waste in content marketing.

Google’s guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content is the standard Firewater plans against. It asks whether a page shows first-hand expertise, and whether it satisfies someone who arrived from search. Those two tests remove plenty of proposed topics, which is exactly why we apply them early.

The deliverable at this stage is a document rather than a conversation, covering topics, owners, formats, target queries and publication dates for the opening quarter.

What we produce

Production is where most content programmes stall, so we treat it as a scheduling problem as much as a creative one. Every piece has a named writer, a named reviewer and a publication date before work begins. Firewater’s content services include:

  • Long-form articles and blog posts built on keyword and buyer research
  • Website and landing page copy, including product and service pages
  • Email newsletters and nurture sequences
  • Video scripting, filming and editing for social feeds and web pages
  • Infographics, eBooks and downloadable guides
  • Case studies and customer stories
  • Short social posts adapted from longer pieces

Written work

Our copywriters interview the people who know the product, then write from that material. Interviews produce the detail that separates a useful page from a summary of the category. The Nielsen Norman Group reported in May 2008 that users read at most 28% of the words on an average page visit. We therefore position the answer near the top of the page and keep paragraphs deliberately short.

Video, design and downloads

Written pieces travel further when they ship with something to look at. Our video content team turns an article into a two-minute explainer, and the design studio handles infographics, one-pagers and gated guides. One research effort feeds several formats, which is where the economics of content improve.

Distribution, repurposing and reach

A published article is not automatically a distributed one. Firewater plans the route to an audience at the same time as the piece itself, because good writing still fails without circulation. Each core piece is then cut into smaller assets for the channels you already hold.

Owned and social channels

Newsletters, LinkedIn posts and short video carry most of the load. Our social media marketing team schedules the derivative posts, while earned coverage runs through public relations when a story merits a media approach.

Search and AI answers

Search remains the channel with the longest tail, and AI assistants now summarise the same pages. Writing that states facts plainly, cites named sources and carries a date is easier for a model to quote. That overlap is real work, not a separate product, and we handle it through our answer engine optimisation approach using the same material.

What you get, and how we report on it

A content marketing agency should be able to show you what it will deliver and when. The table below sets out a typical shape for a Johannesburg client on a mid-sized retainer. We adjust the mix after the first quarter, once the data shows which formats earn attention.

We write for brands that sell into very different rooms. Exclusive Books speaks to a reading audience that judges editorial quality on sight, while Mister Sweet needs quick, playful material aimed at families. The underlying process is identical, while the editorial voice is completely different.

Measurement closes the loop on every engagement. We track organic sessions by page, assisted conversions, subscriber growth and the queries each piece ranks for. No agency can promise you a ranking or a lead volume, and a content marketing agency that does is selling something it cannot control.
