Sending is the easy part. Arriving in the inbox is the hard part, and the rules tightened sharply in February 2024. Google’s email sender guidelines now require SPF or DKIM authentication from every sender, and spam complaint rates reported in Postmaster Tools have to stay below 0.3%. Anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail needs SPF, DKIM and DMARC in place together.
Firewater is an email marketing agency in Sandton, Johannesburg, and email has been part of the work here through most of 26 years in digital marketing. We build and clean the list, write the campaigns with our content marketing team, and connect the results to lead generation targets. For brands running several channels at once, email is planned inside the wider digital marketing engagement so the messages do not collide.
Bought lists are the fastest way to wreck a sending domain, so we refuse to load them. Consent is recorded at the point of signup, with the date, the source and the wording the subscriber agreed to. That record protects your deliverability and it protects you under South African law. It also produces a list that responds, which is the only kind worth paying for.
A list grows from something worth trading an email address for. Firewater builds the offer, the form and the confirmation sequence as one unit, then tests the whole path rather than the button colour. Signup placement, field count and the promise made above the form all move the numbers, and our conversion optimisation specialists run those tests properly. Double opt-in stays the default for cold or imported sources.
Cleaning matters as much as collecting. Hard bounces get suppressed immediately, role addresses are screened out, and subscribers who have ignored twelve consecutive sends are moved to a win-back track before they are removed. Shrinking a list feels wrong to most marketing managers, and we have that argument roughly every second month. It usually raises revenue per send, because mailbox providers score you on how the engaged portion behaves.
One message to everyone is a waste of a good list. Firewater segments on behaviour first, using purchase history, browse activity, average order value and time since last order, then layers on preference data where subscribers have given it. Retailers usually need category, brand and branch splits as well, while business lists need a lifecycle stage. The segments are documented, so nobody inherits a mystery when the marketing manager changes jobs.
Automation carries the load after that. Welcome series, browse and cart abandonment, replenishment reminders, post-purchase review requests and dormancy win-backs run continuously and earn their keep between campaigns. Revenue by flow, by segment and by device lands in your reporting dashboard next to every other channel. Flows get reviewed on a schedule, because a welcome series written three years ago is usually lying about the product range.
Deliverability is an engineering job before it is a creative one, and it is where an email marketing agency proves itself. Firewater sets up SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your sending domain, moves you onto an authenticated subdomain, and warms new IPs gradually instead of blasting the first send. Postmaster Tools and seed testing then show you what really happened to the send. Authentication failures and complaint spikes get caught in the same week they happen, not in the quarterly review.
Compliance is the other half, and in this country it is the half that carries a fine. The Information Regulator enforces eight conditions for the lawful processing of personal information, and section 69 of POPIA narrows electronic direct marketing to people who have consented. There is a limited exception for existing customers, and we set consent records, opt-out handling and retention rules up where an auditor can inspect them. Senders who treat POPIA as an afterthought usually meet it for the first time during a complaint.
Email remains the one marketing channel you own outright, and that matters more every year. No algorithm change removes your list, no auction inflates the price of reaching it, and no platform outage takes it offline. The job of an email marketing agency is to turn first-time buyers into repeat buyers and to give you a revenue line you can plan against. It also tells you what your customers want next, faster than any survey.
Firewater has delivered digital work for brands including Exclusive Books and Mister Sweet, both with large customer bases that need segmenting rather than blanket sends.
Our office is in Sandton, Johannesburg, and the team runs email programmes for clients across the country.
