A public relations agency that earns coverage instead of buying it

Public relations is the practice of earning attention for a business on other people’s platforms: news sites, trade press, broadcast, podcasts and creator channels. Firewater is a public relations agency in Johannesburg, and PR runs inside our digital marketing practice of 26 years rather than alongside it.

Most of the year, a PR agency is doing marketing work. Crisis handling matters, but it is the smallest part of the retainer for almost every client. The larger part is giving journalists and editors something worth publishing, week after week.

We work on the view that coverage follows material, not contacts. A well-briefed story with data, a named spokesperson and usable images will place itself. A thin story sent to a warm contact wastes the contact. Our PR services cover:

  • PR strategy, message development and spokesperson briefing
  • Press releases, feature pitches, opinion pieces and media statements
  • Media list building and ongoing publication liaison across digital, print and broadcast
  • Product launches, activations, events and eRSVP management
  • Reputation monitoring and crisis communications planning
  • Digital PR aimed at coverage that carries links and brand mentions
  • Creator and influencer liaison for consumer stories

Media relations and the work of earning coverage

Editors in South Africa are working with smaller newsrooms and shorter deadlines than a decade ago. That makes the quality of the material you send them the deciding factor. Firewater writes to that reality: a clear angle, a real news hook, quotes that say something, and images at print resolution.

We build media lists by beat rather than by publication. The journalist who covers your category is the one who will answer. Pitches are sent individually, with the angle in the first line. Follow-up is once, politely, and then we move on. Press releases are drafted to be publishable as they stand, which is the only version of a release an overloaded desk will use.

Supporting assets decide whether a story gets used. Photography, infographics and fact sheets come from our design and collateral team, and broadcast or online video is produced by our video content team. Work for the Gender Based Violence Response Fund is the clearest example of the standard this demands. The subject is serious, the audiences are sensitive, and every word carries weight.

Reputation, readiness and the bad week

Crisis work is won or lost before the crisis. The organisations that handle a bad week well are the ones that decided in advance who speaks, who approves, and how fast.

Preparation

Firewater builds a short readiness pack with every PR client. It holds a drafted holding statement, an approval chain with named people, and a contact tree with after-hours numbers. It also lists the three or four scenarios most likely to hit your category. We review it twice a year and run one tabletop rehearsal with the people named in it. A readiness pack nobody has read is the same as no pack at all.

Response

When something does happen, the sequence is fixed: verify the facts, agree a single position, brief the spokesperson, respond on the channel where the story is running, and monitor. Comment threads and direct messages are handled by our social media management team on the same escalation path. Professional conduct in this work is set out in the PRISA Code of Ethics. Any claim made in a public statement also has to meet the Advertising Regulatory Board codes once it strays into advertising.

Digital PR, mentions and the search benefit

Coverage now does two jobs. It reaches the publication’s readers, and it tells search engines and answer engines that your brand is discussed by sources they already trust. That second job is why PR and search work belong in the same room.

Firewater treats links as an outcome of good coverage, never as the product being bought. Paid or exchanged links breach Google’s spam policies, and the risk sits with the client, not the agency that sold them. We pitch stories, and the links follow the ones that get published.

Brand mentions in credible sources also feed the systems that generate AI answers, which our answer engine optimisation team works on directly. Consumer stories that need a human voice are placed with our influencer marketing team, and the surrounding editorial calendar is run by our content marketing team.

What a Firewater PR retainer covers

A public relations agency should be easy to hold to account. Here is what a standard month looks like and how often each piece lands.

Reporting is a coverage log rather than a slide show. Each item is listed with the publication, the date, the angle used and the tone of the piece. We count placements we can link to. Equivalent advertising value is not reported, because it measures the wrong thing and flatters the agency.

B2B programmes run differently to consumer ones, and Tangent sits at the business-to-business end of our client list. Where PR needs to sit inside a wider plan of search, paid media and content, it is planned by our digital marketing team from the start.
