Video is the most expensive asset most brands commission, and the most frequently wasted. One film gets cut for a launch, posted twice, then never versioned again. Page weight is the quieter problem, because Google’s guidance puts a good Largest Contentful Paint at 2.5 seconds or less (web.dev). A video content agency should be solving for both of those before anyone books a camera.
Firewater is a video content agency in Sandton, Johannesburg, producing work for brands that need volume and consistency rather than one annual showpiece. We script, shoot, edit, caption, grade and deliver in every aspect ratio the channel plan calls for. Production is scoped against the content marketing calendar and the social media marketing plan, so the edit list is decided before the shoot. Stills, thumbnails and end frames come from our design studio in the same batch.
Planning the deliverables first changes what gets filmed. A shoot built for fifteen edits looks different from a shoot built for one, in coverage, wardrobe changes and the way interviews are framed. That planning costs a morning and routinely saves a second production day later in the year. It also settles the arguments about scope while they are still cheap to have.
Short form earns attention and long form earns trust, and most brands need both. Vertical fifteen-second cuts carry the feed, product demonstrations and customer stories sit better at two to four minutes, and a founder interview can run longer on YouTube where the audience arrived deliberately. Firewater plans the set so both come out of one production window. The long edit is filmed first, then harvested for the short ones, which keeps the story consistent across every format. Where a brief calls for a face the audience already trusts, we plan the shoot around creator-led production instead.
Paid and organic pull in different directions. Organic video can breathe for a second or two, while a paid asset has to declare its subject in the opening frame and hold it there. A paid cut must also meet the technical specification of the buying platform, including the IAB Tech Lab VAST requirements used across programmatic inventory. Cutdowns for Meta advertising and TikTok advertising are exported to each platform’s own specification, with no letterboxing, no burnt-in bars and no logo cropped away by the safe area.
The process is deliberately boring, because surprises on a shoot day are expensive ones. A written brief sets the single message, the audience and the full deliverables list before anything else moves. A treatment and script follow, then a shot list, a schedule, casting or talent confirmation, location recce and permissions. Firewater signs all of that off with the client before the crew is booked.
On the day, the producer works to the shot list and captures the extra coverage the edit list demands. First cuts reach the client within an agreed window, with two rounds of amends built into the schedule. Files are delivered in named, dated folders with masters archived, so a request in eighteen months does not become a reshoot. Music is licensed for the territory and term the campaign needs, and those terms are recorded alongside the master.
Most social video is watched with the sound off, and a good proportion of your audience needs captions regardless. Firewater burns captions into social cuts and supplies separate subtitle files for platforms that support them, following YouTube’s own guidance on subtitles and captions. Type is sized for a phone held at arm’s length. Contrast is checked against the footage instead of against a white background.
Accessibility work doubles as search and performance work. Uploaded transcripts give search engines text to read, chapters help viewers find the section they want, and correctly compressed files keep a landing page from stalling on load. Video embedded on your site is set to load lazily and never to autoplay with sound. Descriptive file names, titles and thumbnails handle the rest of the discovery work.
The output of a quarter’s work should be a shelf of usable assets, in the aspect ratios your channels need, with captions and masters archived. Media teams stop waiting on creative before every flight. Sales, HR and recruitment can pull from the same library without commissioning anything new. The cost per usable asset falls each time you plan a shoot this way.
Firewater has produced video and campaign content for organisations including KFC and the GBVF response programme, which sit at opposite ends of the tonal range and needed very different production approaches.
